Kumamoto Japan Earthquake Relief Fund: On July 28, 2026, a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan (Kyushu). The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded maximum seismic intensity 7—the highest on Japan’s scale—in areas including Uki and Hikawa. The epicenter was near Kumamoto City. Aftershocks continue, and authorities have warned of further strong tremors and landslide risk in the coming days.
As of Now, the confirmed death toll stood at least 13, with hundreds injured and people still missing or trapped. A partial collapse and explosion (suspected gas-related) at Aeon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima trapped people; rescuers pulled survivors from the rubble. A chimney collapse at a Nippon Paper Industries facility in Yatsushiro left workers unaccounted for. Homes collapsed, fires broke out, roads ruptured, and power, water, and gas were disrupted for tens of thousands of households. Hundreds of evacuation centers opened, and tens of thousands of residents were ordered or advised to evacuate. Hospitals treated dozens of injured patients while some medical facilities themselves faced utility outages.
Kumamoto knows the pain of major earthquakes—the 2016 events caused widespread destruction. This new disaster has once again left families without safe shelter, reliable electricity, clean water, and steady access to food and medicine.
